Pilates Rehab

Pilates Rehab at Pandora Pilates in Coral Gables is a bridge between clinical physical therapy and regular Pilates practice. Led by Pilates Rehab Specialists who hold both physical therapy credentials and Pilates certifications, these private sessions use the full classical apparatus — Reformer, Tower (Cadillac), Pilates Chair, and Barrels — to restore strength, mobility, and function after injury, illness, or surgery. Different apparatuses offer different resistance vectors, spring tensions, and movement planes, allowing our specialists to precisely target the structures and patterns most relevant to your recovery.

What Is Pilates Rehab?

Pilates Rehab is not a group fitness class, nor is it standard physical therapy. It sits in between, a supervised, one-on-one, movement-based recovery program that draws on the intelligence of the Pilates method and the breadth of the classical apparatus to systematically rebuild the body after disruption. Where physical therapy addresses the acute clinical phase, evaluation, diagnosis, manual therapy, and early intervention; Pilates Rehab addresses the recovery and rebuilding phase, helping clients restore full function, return to activity, and develop the movement habits that prevent re-injury.

Conditions That Benefit from Pilates Rehab

  • Chronic lower back pain and lumbar disc issues

  • Post-surgical recovery — hip, knee, spine, shoulder, and general orthopedic

  • Rotator cuff and shoulder impingement rehabilitation

  • Scoliosis — Pilates has a strong evidence base for improving spinal curves and reducing pain

  • Osteoporosis — low-impact loading and functional movement for bone health

  • Athletic injuries — sprains, strains, overuse injuries, and return-to-sport preparation

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction — pre- and postnatal recovery, prolapse, incontinence

  • Neurological conditions — Parkinson's disease, MS, stroke recovery, and balance disorders

  • Hip and knee replacement recovery

  • Balance and proprioception deficits

Pilates Rehab vs. Physical Therapy

Both services at Pandora are led by Doctors of Physical Therapy who are also certified Pilates teachers. The difference is in the clinical phase and primary focus:

  • Physical Therapy — evaluation, manual therapy, clinical management, and superbills for insurance reimbursement. Best for the acute phase of an injury or post-surgical recovery.

  • Pilates Rehab — apparatus-based therapeutic movement, progressive loading, return to full function and activity. Best for the rebuilding phase after the acute clinical phase has been addressed.

Many Pandora clients move through both: beginning with Physical Therapy for acute care, transitioning to Pilates Rehab for progressive rebuilding, and eventually continuing with private Pilates sessions for ongoing performance and maintenance.

Pilates Rehab Sessions

Our Pilates Rehab program is structured around three session types, each serving a different point in your recovery and wellness journey. All sessions are led by doctors of physical therapy or Pilates-certified rehab specialists, and draw on the full classical apparatus — Reformer, Tower, Chair, and Barrels — to address your specific needs.

Pilates Rehabilitation Evaluation

Your first Pilates Rehab appointment is a comprehensive evaluation session led by a doctor of physical therapy certified in Pilates for rehabilitation. Your specialist will conduct a postural and alignment assessment, review your medical history and any imaging or diagnoses, and discuss your goals for Pilates. The session includes hands-on Pilates apparatus work designed to identify movement imbalances, restrictions, and misalignments, giving your specialist the clinical picture needed to design a customized Pilates Rehab program tailored to your body and recovery goals. This session is the appropriate starting point for all new Pilates Rehab clients, and for those adding Pilates to an existing Physical Therapy program.

Pilates Rehabilitation Sessions

Ongoing Pilates Rehab sessions are 50–55 minutes of individualized, apparatus-based therapeutic movement led by a doctor of physical therapy or Pilates-certified rehab specialist. Each session targets your specific movement limitations, recovery milestones, and wellness goals, drawing on the full classical apparatus — Reformer, Tower (Cadillac), Pilates Chair, and Barrels — and progressing systematically as your strength, mobility, and function improve. Pilates Rehab sessions are designed for clients recovering from injury, surgery, or chronic pain who want to rebuild under expert clinical supervision using the precision and depth of the Pilates method.

Pilates “Restorative” Sessions

A private Pilates session focused on slower, more deliberate movement, emphasizing postural alignment, joint mobility, breath work, and nervous system recovery. Restorative sessions are led by a certified Pilates teacher and incorporate hands-on assisted stretching, props, and a guided meditation to close. This session type is designed for clients who need a gentler pace; those managing fatigue, stress, or systemic conditions, those in early recovery phases, or those who simply benefit from a more mindful, parasympathetic approach to their movement practice. Restorative sessions complement both active Pilates Rehab programs and regular group class practice.
